Local City Bicycling Initiatives
Milan: West Rock River Bridge information
Recreational Path at the Veteran's Memorial at Carr's Crossing
bridge. Total project cost: $307.852. Federal Share (grant) Illinois
Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP), $246,282. Remaining cost
will be a local match. Timeline for completion: Summer 2011.
This project will complete the non-motorized separated trail connection
from the south side of the West Rock River Bridge to the Hennepin Canal
Trail in Milan. Completion of the south side trail connection will
provide the only safe and efficient accommodation for non-motorized
transportation users to cross the Rock River in the region.
The north
sided connection in Moline and Rock Island were completed earlier this
year, leaving the Milan portion to provide connectivity to Milan.
The
project involves construction of a 10 foot wide hard-surfaced asphalt
multi-use separated corridor trail connecting the existing Hennepin
canal Trail at Mill Creek to the existing 10 foot separated trail
accommodation on the south side of the West Rock River Bridge. It
will provide access for non- motorized users across the Rock River
connecting to the over 5-mile Kiwanis Trail in Moline, Ben Williamson
Park and the Crosstown Connector Trail in Rock Island, and extend the
Hennepin Trial in Milan. It will put into use the approximately two
million dollar trail accommodation, The Illinois DOT paid to design and
construct, on the West Rock River Bridge.
Once both sides are connected
there will be a combined 11.3 miles of connected trails across the Rock
River.
Completion of the south side trail connection provides more
opportunities to link, expand, and enhance other existing and planned
local, regional, state and national trails. Additionally, growth and
development is planed and underway south of the Rock River and this
project will increase the economic vitality and development interest in
this area.
This project is supported by the 2035 Quad City Area Long
Range Transportation Plan, The Village of Milan Comprehensive Plan, and
the Quad Cities, Illinois-Iowa Metropolitan Area Greenway Plan, and is
consistent with sustainability and livability initiatives!
